In conversation with Mark, founder of Your Adventure Challenge

If you’ve ever contacted us, you’ve likely spoken to founder Mark. Passionate about helping people tackle personal and charity challenges, Mark shared his journey and inspiration behind Your Adventure Challenge.

What inspired you to help people with personal and charity challenges?

There’s something powerful about personal and charity challenges. I remember doing the River Wye 85-mile Challenge with a friend whose father had passed away from cancer. It was a tough 3-day challenge, but raising money for MacMillan Charity felt great. More importantly, it helped my friend and his family feel they were making a difference. It creates a story that lasts a lifetime. Anyone who’s done a tough challenge knows the incredible feeling of reaching the end. Through Your Adventure Challenge, I hope to help others experience that.

What made you set up Your Adventure Challenge?

My brother’s illness was the catalyst. He contracted necrotising fasciitis, and his survival was uncertain. When he started to recover, I wanted to give him motivation. I proposed creating an outdoors business to help young people, which had helped us both. Initially, he wasn’t on board, but eventually, we came up with the name, and that’s where it all began. The name “Your Adventure Challenge” is significant because it emphasises personal ownership and achievement. We’re here to support your unique journey.

What was your first charity challenge?

My first challenge was over 25 years ago for my nephew, who had a rare genetic disorder, AT. Sixteen of us tackled the Yorkshire Three Peaks in horrible weather, with some team members struggling after a night of partying. Despite the challenges, we all made it, raising money and setting the stage for many more challenges.

Do you have a favourite memory or moment?

I cherish the moments of achievement and the times when things don’t go as planned. One memorable trip involved canoeing across Loch Ericht to climb Ben Alder in Scotland. We faced gale-force winds and had to strap our canoes together, using a sail to navigate the rough waters. It was a serious but exhilarating experience, highlighting the importance of having the right guides to ensure safety.

What advice would you give to someone new to charity challenges?

Choose the right challenge for you and prepare properly. Pick something that will push you but won’t be miserable or unsafe. Consider your goals and build from there. Preparation is key—train, test your skills, and gear in various conditions. Proper preparation not only makes your challenge achievable but also inspires others to support you.
